FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I HAVE EXPERIENCED OR SUSPECT SEXUAL ABUSE?
It is the goal of Courage First to prevent abuse through education, however, we are not an emergency service provider. If you or someone you know has been made a victim of sexual abuse, or you suspect that sexual abuse may be occurring, please see our directory list of National Hotlines to be put in touch with a trained responder. If you need to report an emergency, please call 911.
WHAT IS COURAGE FIRST?
Courage First is an abuse prevention and education program created and funded by The Foundation for Global Sports Development. Courage First collaborates with survivors and leading national child abuse prevention organizations to educate on the prevalence and warning signs of sexual abuse. The program seeks to provide education to adults and teens through easy-to-access online resources like podcasts, newsletters, and videos.
The Foundation’s film production arm, Sidewinder Films, produced the documentary At the Heart of Gold: Inside the USA Gymnastics Scandal, which covered the systemic failings and lack of parental education that allowed an abuser like Larry Nassar to harm hundreds of young athletes over the span of decades.
WHO DEVELOPED THE TRAINING CURRICULUM?
Rather than creating our own online training program for adults, we are working with Darkness to Light to provide their stellar online certification program, Stewards of Children®, to adults whose organization participates in Courage First. You can sign up for the program HERE.
WHAT MAKES THIS PROGRAM DIFFERENT?
Stewards of Children® uses real people and real stories to show you how to protect children. The framework of the training is built off the foundation of The 5 Steps to Protecting Children™.
You’ll meet survivors who lived through child sexual abuse, experienced its immediate and long-term effects, and ultimately were able to find healing. You’ll meet experts who work with children and families, and confront abuse on a daily basis. Many of these survivors and experts are also parents themselves.
HOW DOES THE TRAINING WORK?
Stewards of Children® is available in a group setting led by a Darkness to Light Authorized Facilitator or it can be taken individually online. The training is 2 hours.
WHY SHOULD I GET TRAINED?
Child sexual abuse is likely the most prevalent health problem children face, with the most serious array of consequences. In fact, 1 in 10 children will experience sexual abuse before their 18th birthday.
This means that whether you work with youth, are a parent, or are simply a member of a community, it is highly likely that someone you know or care for has experienced, or is currently experiencing, child sexual abuse. It’s going to happen whether you are prepared to deal with it or not – unless you stop it from happening. The good news is, it can be stopped.
IS THE PROGRAM ONLY AVAILABLE IN ENGLISH?
No—Stewards of Children® is available in English and Spanish. The Spanish version is hosted by psychologist and CNN medical contributor Dr. Maris Azaret.
IS THE COURAGE FIRST PROGRAM ONLY APPLICABLE FOR YOUTH SPORTS ORGANIZATIONS?
Although the Courage First program emphasizes safety in youth sports, its lessons are universal, and can be applied to any group setting or organization where young people are present.
